It’s been known for quite some time that Memphis is well aware some pieces are going to get dealt eventually if they want to avoid paying the luxury tax. Well, that piece seems to be forward Rudy Gay, who they have been trying to shop around to plenty NBA teams.
Here’s what Marcus Thompson, Warriors beat writer for the Bay Area News Group , said about Rudy Gay being linked to the Warriors:
According to a source, the Warriors engaged in preliminary talks with Memphis about star small forward Rudy Gay. But the talks didn’t produced much as Memphis is not interested in taking the Warriors’ less-desirable contracts (such as Richard Jefferson) and the Grizzlies want what the Warriors don’t have.
Warriors executive board member Jerry West, formerly the Grizzlies’ general manager, is high on Gay. And with Andrew Bogut’s return uncertain, the Warriors could use another dominant player.
Gay’s not only being in trade rumors with the Warriors, he’s being offered to the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings as well.
Here’s the story on the Suns from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:
The Phoenix Suns are discussing a trade for Rudy Gay with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to sources.
The Grizzlies have a strong desire to acquire Jared Dudley and a future first round pick.
And here’s the Sacramento’s tidbit from The Commercial Appeal, a Memphis newspaper:
The Sacramento Kings are one of the teams that the Griz recently held preliminary talks with, according to a league source.
Gay is currently making $16.4 million this year and $17.8 million and $19.3 million in the next two seasons. The Grizzlies new ownership are having doubts about the team chances of winning a title despite having one of the best NBA records (22-10) after the first 32 games of the season.
